What is Eat Stop Eat?
Eat Stop Eat suggests an easy way to lose weight by fasting. Brad Pilon is the author of this book.
There is an immense gap between people’s attitude toward health and fitness and the theories found within this book when it was first published in 2007.
But in a few short years, Eat Stop Eat becomes an accepted dietary approach to losing weight that is being supported by doctors, dietitians, and other mainstream health experts.
I've downloaded Eat Stop Eat E-Book and practiced the method. And now, I give my honest deep review about it in this article.
What is Fasting?
The definition of fasting is quite simple. I’ve read through countless dictionary entries and website descriptions of fasting, and have decided that the best definition of fasting is the following:
“The act of willingly abstaining from some or all food, and in some cases drink, for a pre-determined period of time.” The key word in this definition is “willingly” as it is the difference between fasting and starving. (Page 21)
Brad Pilon tells his journey finding the truth about weight loss until he found that there are only two absolute truths about nutrition and weight loss.
- Prolonged caloric restriction is the only proven nutritional method of weight loss
- Human beings can only be in one of the following states: fed or fasted.
Based on that, he has opinion that there is no method which is exactly the best way to lose weight. As long as we restrict the calory intake and have a wise management about when to eat and not, the diet will be successful.
The Truth About Fasting
Fasting is well known in many cultures and religions. But nowadays, the practice has gone in North America, except for religion purpose. And we can see how many people in North America fight against obesity.
And then, there are a lot of diet methods, supplements and fitness equipments suggested. Which is the author found that all of them are only products of diet industries for sell.
Fasting, surprisingly, is rarely mentioned in lose weight researches. Why? Because most of the researches were done by diet industries. To convince about their products, to make some new products etc.
Diet industries usually talk about eating some superfoods, consuming some supplements and use some equipments. There is no selling point about “not eating”.
The Eat Stop Eat lifestyle is taking a 24-hour break from eating once or twice per week. It was chosen through research because it was any easy time-frame to remember, allowed people to eat every day, and was suitable for all different levels of body fat and weight loss needs.
This is the simplest way to lose weight. No drugs, no special foods, no equipments, no surgery and almost without any side effects.
Why Intermittent Fasting?
Brad Pilon had reached the conclusion that short-term intermittent (never in a row) fasting, was not only an effective and easy way to cut calories and thus lose unwanted body fat, but it was also associated with many amazing health benefits, such as:
( Disclaimer : Result is not typical and will be vary between each person )
- decreasing insulin levels & increasing insulin sensivity
- decreasing blood glucose levels
- increasing lipolysis and fat burning
- increasing glucagon levels
- increasing epinephrine and norepinephrine levels
- increasing growth hormone levels
- increasing weight loss and fat loss
- decreasing chronic inflammation
- increasing cellular cleaning
Brad Pilon explains each benefit in a particular sub chapter. The benefits from fasting occur in the first 24-hours. That's why we can use the Eat Stop Eat style of flexible intermittent fasting and never go a day without eating.

My First Impression about Eat Stop Eat
Honestly, at the first time, I didn’t have any idea what kind of diet is Eat Stop Eat talking about. But my daughter can figure it out easily by decoding the picture in its cover, “So, this book is about eating, then stop eating because the bowl is empty, and eating again. Right?”
In this book, Brad Pilon shows his knowledges, opinions and argumentations about fasting as the part of his recommended diet. He usually follow any statement with a footnote about its scientific source. So we know that this book doesn’t contain with lip service only.
Generally, I like the way this book written. Easy to understand, systematic and every words are meaningful. We can read it quickly since the author usually give a bottom line note in the last paragraph of each topic.
My Experience with Fasting
Personally, I see Eat Stop Eat is very similar to fasting in my religion. I am fasting one month full, 13 hours break from eating each day. Since being said that there is still a benefit to fasting for less than 24 hours, I can say I am agree with a lot of statements in this book. Fasting can do weight loss, fasting is good for health, even improve our health quality.
Fasting for a month each year is an obligation in my religion. Although there is an exception for some people because of their weakness like children, elder persons, getting ill, pregnant and breastfeeding women etc.
I chose not to fast in my first pregnant. Then I tried to fast several days in my second pregnant. And I decided to fast one month full every years later even I was pregnant and/or breastfeeding. I feel getting healthier year by year and reach an ideal weight, especially after fasting.
Eat Stop Eat suggests us to use fasting once or twice a week as our lifestyle. I believe it is a good and healthy lifestyle although I didn’t do it yet. Because it’s suggested in my religion, too.
